JoJo Nieves is a songwriter, producer, and musician living in Seattle, WA. Drawing inspiration from the genres of Indie Folk, New Americana, and cinematic orchestration, Nieves creates music that is both easily accessible and uncompromisingly vulnerable. His latest release is titled “Confessions," a social commentary written and performed in the spirit of 1960's era protest music.
Born in sunny California to a family of musicians, Nieves developed a keen interest in expressing himself through the art at a very young age. He began taking piano lessons at five and jumped at every opportunity he could to sing in front of an audience. At age thirteen he purchased his first bass guitar, a blue Squier P-Bass, and developed a lifelong love for the instrument. He later went on to earn his BA in music with an emphasis in electric and upright bass performance.
While attending college in the mid-2000s, Nieves discovered and fell in love with the genres of modern folk and indie rock. Artists like Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, The Avett Brothers, and David Bazan (to name a few) have had an enormous influence on his own development as a musician and songwriter.
Nieves moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 2011, where he became very active in the local music scene. In 2014, he met multi-instrumentalist and producer Dan Lee while running sound at a local venue. After discovering their mutual appreciation for classic jazz, R&B, and soul, Lee invited Nieves to join his band Co-Audio, an eclectic project that blended synth-pop and hip-hop, as their bassist and guitarist. In January 2015, the band grew and reformed as The Copper States. Their new blues-rock-meets-Motown style of music and explosively energetic stage performances emulated a kindred spirit to bands like The Alabama Shakes and The Black Keys. With Nieves on bass, The Copper States regularly packed out the city's most popular music venues.
Nieves also frequently recorded with other artists in the Phoenix music scene. Projects have included the album Even In the Sun by the indie folk duo Old Hours, the single “Closer to a Fall” by Desert Eyes, and three EPs (Second Nature, Christmas, and Fossils) with guitarist and producer Richard Lam. In 2017 and again in 2020, Nieves joined forces with Dan Lee to co-produce two lo-fi instrumental albums under the name LO$ DO$.
After moving to Seattle, WA, in December 2016, Nieves began to focus more intensely on his own artistry as a singer-songwriter. While working as an audio engineer in the city, he met drummer and recording engineer Andrew Lapinid. The two quickly became friends and soon began collaborating at Lapinid’s studio. With Lapinid behind the recording desk, Nieves released his first pair of singles in the fall of 2019 titled The Home Sessions.
JoJo Nieves is an artist on the rise, and he is now finding his personal voice to match his titanic musical talents.
